ICA stops India from constructing Kishanganga Dam

ISLAMABAD: The International Court of Arbitration (ICA) Saturday issued an interim order, stopping India from going ahead with the controversial project of Kishanganga Dam, Geo News reported.

Under the ICA order, India will not construct a permanent structure over River Neelum or at the site of Kishanganga, according to a statement issued by Presidential Spokesman of Pakistan.

India will not go ahead with building a structure that may affect the flow of water stream, the spokesman said.

He further said that Pakistan had sought from India an undertaking for construction in the light of international law which the latter had rejected. This led Pakistan to go to ICA which has now issued the interim order on the issue.

Pakistan rejects US claims over Saleem Shahzad murder

Information minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said that Adm Mike Mullen's statement was "extremely irresponsible and regrettable."

She said it would cause difficulties in relations between the sides and prove a setback to the war against terror.

US-Pakistan relations have been extremely fraught in recent months.

But Adm Mike Mullen's remarks are the most explicit yet in a downward spiral in recent US-Pakistan relations.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says that for a senior American official to say that he believes the authorities were involved heaps further pressure on Islamabad at a time when the Pakistani government's relationship with Washington - on which it has become so reliant for support - is under serious strain.

Mr Shahzad was kidnapped near his home in Islamabad in May. His body was found two days later in Punjab province. At the time, many in the Pakistani media blamed Pakistan's powerful military intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), for the murder. The ISI has denied involvement in the case.

Adm Mullen said he could not confirm if the the ISI was involved.

"I have not seen anything that would disabuse that report that the government knew about this," Adm Mullen told journalists in Washington on Thursday.

"It was sanctioned by the government, yeah," he said

Syria: 'Hundreds of thousands' hold anti-Assad protests

Rights groups say at least three people were shot dead by government troops in the central city of Homs.

Protests were reported in the capital, Damascus, in eastern and western cities and in towns along the border regions.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned time is running out for Syria's government to usher in reforms.

Speaking during a visit to Lithuania, she said President Bashar Assad would face more organised resistance to his rule unless the country saw "a genuine transition to democracy".

Human rights groups estimate that about 1,700 people have been killed in three months of anti-government protests.

Mr Assad has promised a dialogue on introducing political reforms but the protesters are calling for him to stand down
